Title: Haikyo III - Of silence and shadows Size: 30 x 30 x 1 cm Sides: not painted Mediums: Acrylic on wooden panel, graphite, oil bars, pierre noir crayon, wax crayons Finish: varnished Signature: Front, also signed Certificate of Authenticity Frame: Unframed, needs to be framed Abstract painting in water-based mixed media on panel. This painting is part of the series ‘Haikyo’, inspired by urban exploration. This series is about the decay of uninhabited space which I find profoundly beautiful. There is something about abandoned spaces that I find very exciting. The aura, the vibes, the imagination of what once was… The questions... Who lived there? What happened there? It is the viewer who rewrites the story of what took place there. This is the feeling I want to express with these works. A feeling of curiosity, of wanting to explore what you see and to discover your own story in it. In Japan, abandoned infrastructure is known as haikyo (literally "ruins"), and the term is synonymous with the practice of urban exploration, hence the title for this series.

Linda Coppens is a Belgian contemporary abstract painter. From an early age she demonstrated an innate artistic talent but could not pursue an art education at that time, instead she earned a Master in Psychology. But her interest in art remained and about twenty years later she pursued an art education at the Academy of Visual Arts in Liedekerke, Belgium. In 2020, she moved to Torrevieja, Spain, where she currently resides. In her colourful paintings she mobilizes colour, texture and gestural mark making as a structure for the creation of abstract compositions to evoke a sense of emotional balance in the viewer. Linda Coppens has exhibited extensively in Belgium, US, France and Luxembourg. Her art is found in many private collections worldwide. Using a mix of mediums that includes acrylic paint, oil and cold wax, I layer my mediums using non-traditional tools and techniques. My inspirations include the unexpected feelings and thoughts generated by poetry; the weather worn surfaces of derelict urban buildings; and the vibrant and bountiful visual world of nature. In order to evoke the various realms of human experience that inspire me, I surrender to process, allowing my paintings to manifest slowly according to their own rhythm and internal logic rather than planning my compositions in advance. Time is also an essential element in my work, as the numerous layers of paint can be read as records of the history of their own making.
