About The Artwork

This Heart Sutra scroll shows the Heart Sutra, Japanese Shingyo 心 経, brushed in the cursive style of Japanese calligraphy. Brushing the Heart Sutra in cursive is as if you were transforming form into sound, like a musical annotation of the vibration of the characters. This results in a singular melody of the Heart Sutra, a Heart Sutra sung by the brush. I like to copy the Heart Sutra in all the different styles of Japanese calligraphy, but to brush it in the cursive style is a gift, a tremendous joy of artistic creation. The Heart Sutra is mounted on a scroll; green blue silk with fine pattern and natural wooden rollers at the bottom. Size in cm: 205 x 56 x 0.2 cm The scroll will be sent inside a traditionally-made silk box.

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

My artwork comprises Zen calligraphy, watercolor and ink paintings, and abstract calligraphies. My mediums are ink, watercolors and natural pigments on rice paper, mainly Xuan paper. I wield the Chinese and Japanese brush, preferably the flexible sheep's hair brush. Many of my Zen calligraphies express the Emptiness teaching from the Heart Sutra, which has been the original inspiration for my Japanese calligraphy artwork. Other calligraphies focus on the teachings of the Diamond Sutra, Platform Sutra, or depict Zen koan, Zen poetry or single kanji. In my watercolors and ink paintings I strive for a pictorial synthesis of the subject, in the spirit of Japanese ink painting, using bold washes and vivid brush strokes.
