Hecuba and Ployxena Painting

The starting point for this work is the painting of the same title by Merry Joseph Blondel (1814). The image re-worked loosely in oil on a small board, the result then painted in detail, onto canvas to create an entirely new image, but retaining some of the original composition, and something of the "feel" of the original work. The "feel" is an important element, it also contains some of the artist's own feeling and response, not only to this work, but state of mind while working on it. There is a melancholy and contemplative element which comes through, partly due to the death of a loved one. The multi stage process creates a layered depth in both imagery and meaning. The painting is detailed, and with a flat finish, despite describing thick impasto paint. It is carefully and subtly blended throughout. Inspiration for the technique comes from the artist Glen Brown, among others.
