This painting was part of my practice for making a wall-size work that will feature handprints. I like it very much and will play further with the design in future, as the human handprint is a powerful and evocative motif that connects us with our earliest ancestors and their urge to leave behind im...

About the Artist

Michele Burns

United States

The unique aspect of my art is the incorporation of light absorbing minerals (primarily strontium aluminate doped with rare earths.) I make the pigments myself for maximum luminance. These minerals create dual compositions- one by day, another by night: nightlight art. Rated toy-safe, the minerals glow 10 to 20 hours from any visible light exposure, recharge up to 50 years, and are 18 times brighter than plastic ceiling stars (6000 millicandéla versus 320 mcd). The works are natural, magical, functional night lights.
Each piece begins with the question “What if?” What if I use these colors, textures, materials, techniques? Each work is a surprise package for me to open.
In my head I divide art between art for the home, and "high art" that is perhaps more innovative. I fail often but generally aim for the convergence of the two- attempting to create pleasing things that people want to live with, while pushing boundaries for connoisseurs.

I don't have a single style because my curiosity leads me in many directions, but I love pattern and texture and things that catch the light, and many classical motifs from across time.
