Highlands 60” x 48” Original artwork . The Highlands is a mountainous region encompassing Northwest Scotland. Far away from metropolitan areas this region is Nature thrives in the secluded valleys, forests, rivers and clean air. Incredible wildlife is seen at every turn. Tumbling fresh clear waters roll down the landscape and eagles and falcons keep an eye over a beautiful wilderness of every shade of mossy greens, greys, rust, golden yellows and browns and heather purples. I use a rough texture first to lay down the areas where the rocks and terrain are and then start to layer paint - building up the shades of ground and rocks using a variety of materials such a acrylics, gouache, oil pastel, mineral pigments and sprays on top to give an 3 dimensional effect of a rocky scene. I love to think viewers will see a different surprise each day in the changing light and enjoy new surprises in the work

Growing up in a isolated farming community it was fascinating to see the relationship between humans and the landscape. the toiling of the earth and the relationship between water, ice ,heat ,erosion was all around me at a very simple level. The corrosion on the metals from relentless rain on the farm or the slices of rock I found in the valleys formed this obsession with Time as a great creator and destroyer. I had to put this down on paper, the shapes and colours all around. I invented new techniques of creating the textures and layers and the landscapes I loved so much on my travels as an adult. Taking the subject of landscape painting and abstract art and turning it on its head using burning, smashing, layering with raw materials from geology itself such as sand, salt, quartz, diamond dust, gold leaf, iron.crushed precious stones to create an effect of real geological processes. Recyled papers and shredded plastic pieces I find, recycled heated glass are new ways of using our excessive planetary waste to create something beautiful.
