This painting reflects the struggle of upholding parts of one's personal/familial history, becoming part of the story, while allowing other parts to pass through. We choose how we allow the imprint of our past to affect us. Whether we embrace it, accept it, learn from it, or move on from it. . ..we all have a family history to contend with. The pattern on the quilt is called a "Broken Star" and hints at the notion that we all carry broken bits in our past. . . beauty is found in what comes from the brokenness. This painting is on a deep cradled wood panel edged in the color of the background. It is wired to hang, signed on the front and signed/dated/titled on the back.

Born and raised in the Upper Midwest, Shawna draws deep from the winter-forged well of her over-active imagination. She tends to paint things that amuse or puzzle her. Her folk-style paintings explore many topics such as science, metaphors, nature, humor, patterns, paradoxes, fairytales and a wide variety of musings on domestic subjects. Shawna graduated in 2000 from the University of Minnesota - Duluth with a BFA in Studio Art, Emphasis on Drawing and Printmaking. She has exhibited both locally and nationally. Shawna lives with her verbally talented husband, their twins and a menagerie of critters in a lively neighborhood near lovely Lake Superior.
