Homage to Picasso's "Nu au Chapeau, Buste" Detail Painting

This work was inspired by Picasso's 1965 oil painting "Nu Au Chapeau, Buste" (Nude with Hat, Bust) which I had the privilege of seeing at Sotheby's, New York, in 2019. Those big black eyes kept looking at me, even when I walked away from the painting and turned back to have yet another look. The inventively divided lips showing both a frontal view and a profile view are intriguing and difficult to stop looking at. I really wanted to own Picasso's painting, but I didn't have $8 million handy, so I decided I would paint it instead. My interest was not so much on the hat and I completely left out the nude bust of the original. Instead, I focused on the woman's face, Jacqueline Roque, who in 1965 was Picasso’s muse and wife. My intention was not to attempt an exact copy of the original, but to get the gist of it and interpret it in my own way. There is great understanding to be learned by loading a brush with paint and laying it on canvas the way a master does. It's like taking a time machine back to the master's studio and having a small sampling of the experience of the original creation. I hope viewers are as captivated and uplifted by the happy, contented expression on this portrait of a woman as I am.
