About The Artwork

'Hope' unfolds as a visual tapestry, a delicate embodiment of the elusive concept it endeavors to capture. In its core, an isolated candle rests, its flame suspended in a realm of brushstrokes, unable to transmute paint into genuine radiance. It is but a simulacrum, an idea of light rather than its corporeal manifestation. Just as hope resides within us, an ethereal essence more akin to a flicker in the soul than a tangible entity. The canvas itself contributes to this portrayal, adorned in sparse layers of white, creating an atmosphere of serene emptiness. The very emptiness represents the void that hope strives to fill, the yearning for something beyond the present, for a future yet to unfold. This vacant expanse invites viewers to gaze into its depths, to ponder the notion of hope itself. As one contemplates 'Hope,' the artist's intention becomes clear - to convey not the certainties of life, but the quiet persistence of hope, an idea that remains unextinguished even in the darkest of times. Through the delicate interplay of brush and canvas, 'Hope' offers solace, reminding us that hope, like the candle, may appear fragile, but its flicker remains resilient amidst the most profound obscurity.

Tom engages with an eclectic range of images taken from the everyday, books, art history, and television. By funnelling a broad range of source material onto the canvas, the work oozes ambiguity. Although Tom is extremely selective with his choice of word and image, he combines them in such a way to blur any apparent meaning, allowing for a unique and individual voyage into the deep void created by the multitude of layers of paint and newspaper on the canvas. Tom’s work orbits around anti-capitalist themes as his bombastic brush strokes become an expression of detest towards powers of corruption. Tom’s work is a protest against the spiritually depraved world we live in and aims to sustain and invigorate the culture of art he is so infatuated by. Tom is a London-based artist who is a graduate from the University of Brighton and is currently studying a masters at UAL: Camberwell.
