About The Artwork

A simple strand of beads held between the fingers and “counted” one by one to relieve stress, to pray, to remember, to mark time, to count, and to meditate, prayer beads (or “worry beads” for some) have been in existence since ancient times. Evidence of their use in India, Sumeria and China since before 5000BCE shows that stones, bones, or wood were shaped and stringed together to create handy ways to trade and count but also to pray, to ward off harm, and to adorn. Today, prayer beads are used in Christian and Muslim traditions, and also in the Buddhist and Hindu faiths (called mala) to count prayers and help with meditative thought. They are also used practically to help with addiction and stress and also to celebrate, as a prop in dancing or as a percussion instrument. Prayer or worry beads can be made out of precious stones, pearls, shells, metals, wood, plastic or anything that will appeal to the budget and taste. This painting is a reminder of the striking similarity with which different humans express themselves. From East to West, from religious devotion to secularism, and from ancient to current, we have always expressed fear, joy, serenity, hope, and faith in similar ways. And yet we use these very ways to differentiate, judge and control- and to eventually harm. Next time you feel the reassuring slide of one bead as is embraces the other on a string between your fingers, try to remember that someone in a far away place from a far away time did the very same thing for the very same reason, and be humbled. Striking contrast, spot varnish and gorgeous brushwork make this painting a beautiful addition to your space. Unframed, sawtooth hanger attached

Ghia Haddad is a visual artist from Dubai. Born in Beirut, she lived through war and displacement and understands the power that art and artists have to spark positive social change through expressive color and imagery. She is passionate about examining identities of underrepresented women through her figurative art. Ghia expresses these identities by infusing her female portrait paintings with flowing fabrics, handmade flowers, beads, string and embroidery, thus challenging the traditional belief that fiber art does not have a legitimate space within high art. She also paints Arabic calligraphy with fabric collages on acrylic pours - vivid expressions in the language of her people; Arabic words mirroring the journey of their experience and the shades of their shifting identities.
