I Promise to Take You There Painting

This recent body of work sits in a hinterland between painterly and structural continuously revising ideas around perception, new forms and fixed paths. Greenaway sites the poet Tagore as an influence on his practice and a distinction can be made with the spiritual and ritualistic way in which the artists composes forms from intuitively found images by re-working through a process of deconstruction. The element of deconstruction is fascinating to the artist not only for its value in terms of composition and surficial dictation but for what its lends to the works as metaphors such as a juxtaposition of wider socio-political ideas and mans own path of self-destruction. Greenaway is looking at the idea of emotional interplay of everyday life and living and uses this as a comment on the state of social progression. The artist has a vivid and emotional connection to the ocean. ‘As a child, around the age of eight years old, my father took me on a boat trip on a family holiday. He strapped a snorkel and mask onto my face, held me in his arms and threw us both into the ocean. I opened my eyes and could not believe what I was seeing… there was a whole other world beneath us, full of life. It was so beautiful… I began to mimic the swimming style of many of the creatures surrounding me… I never wanted to resurface…’
