ABOUT THE ARTWORK

There are not many insects that we can claim to be as loved as butterflies. Emblems of beauty and delicacy. The butterflies capture our imagination, satisfy our senses and are "bioindicators": their presence or absence is in fact an important sign of the health of an environment. Hermann Hesse used to say "you must be blind or extremely dry if you do not feel joy at the sight of a butterfly, a fragment of childish enchantment, a shiver of Goethean amazement".

Massimo Campagna was born in 1966 in Naples, where he lives and works; attended the State Institute of Arts in Naples, where he graduated in painting. His artistic path begins in the ‘80s: as a student he lives and breathes art in the famous Lia Rumma Modern art gallery, where he could meet world famous artists. His post-impressionist works were coherent with the international forms of that period. He soon goes beyond the new informal research; the attention towards the world events pushes him to convert his thoughts and opinions about society into figurative language. His denounce through art becomes more tormented, the daily news take the spotlight: from the 2000s Campagna takes the cue from the current events, combining photography and painting. This last is the real subject of his work, that goes beyond figurativeness, almost up to the elimination of the first chromatic trace and the removal of the human figure.
