About The Artwork

This piece was created in 2013 during a period of figurative drawing practice. I'm drawn to the focused expression of the man and the subtly revealed presence of the woman seated next to him as they sell their traditional fabrics. The elegance of their attire, the simplicity of colors, and the coordination between their clothing and the products they sell captivate me. In the context of the post-pandemic year 2021, the image takes on a new significance. The man, seemingly wearing a mask created by shadows, reflects a reality that was once unimaginable—now, the scenario is inseparable from the presence of masks and the awareness of social distancing. Executed with watercolor pencils, this piece is presented as a print edition, unframed. For optimal display, I recommend framing, although hardware is not included. Explore the layers of meaning within this artwork that encapsulates a moment in time and transcend its original context.

An Ecuadorian artist, navigates the local artistic landscape with a distinctive approach, diverging from the typical dichotomy prevalent among Quitenian artists. Rather than aligning with the bohemian left or the elite, art-educated right, Angela embraces her identity as an ambitious Quitenian with a down-to-earth perspective. Balancing her artistic pursuits with a middle-class sensibility, Angela introduces a unique voice in the narrative of Ecuador's art scene. She modestly considers herself a sui generis expressionist, influenced by her early exposure to art through her mother, Angie, and the captivating oil-painting sessions with her aunt-in-law, the esteemed artist Micaela Almeida.Angela's artistic journey began with humble doodles of flowers, symbolizing intimacy and family bonds. Her style, marked by an indiscriminate use of colors, reflects her innate creativity. Turning to digital mediums for expression, she reserves traditional materials for moments of artistic freedom. Angela, embracing vulnerability, desires a return to the simplicity of white canvases. She discreetly embeds messages in her art, inviting viewers to discover joy in nature scenes, and showcasing Quitenian humor with humility and depth.
