These began as ink and watercolor journal entries while spending a very healing time in St. John, USVI and Long Island, Bahamas. I could not stop making them when I got home and they’ve developed to become more textured and layered. Included to the process now are gold/copper leaf, rice paper, resin on a 5x7/4x6 hardboard. Some are made individually, others in small groups and the larger pieces are mounted to an unstretched canvas. After two years of delving deep in political expression with my work, I welcomed the playfulness of these patinated pieces. "Ink Water Gold 046" measures 21x20 inches and is composed using ink water color, copper and gold leaf, ricepaper, and resin on chip board. It features a grid of twelve square panels arranged on a heavily textured, turquoise or sea green background. Each panel is adorned with varied elements such as scribbled text, geometric shapes, and abstract markings. Repeating motifs like sets of triangles, lines, and a circular form intersected by a cross can be observed across the panels. Red dots are selectively placed to provide a stark contrast to the dominant greens and blues. The edges of the panels are rough and irregular, adding an organic and tactile quality to the piece. A deliberate patina suggests age or an aging process incorporated by the artist. A unique aspect of this artwork is its modular nature. The twelve panels offer flexibility in arrangement, allowing them to be displayed in multiple configurations. This modularity invites viewer interaction and personal interpretation of the composition.

A self-taught artist from Paterson, NJ, Alfonse Pagano was an assistant to Len Lye in the 1970s before attending The School of Visual Arts and the New School in NYC. His work has been shown at numerous galleries and The Laguna Gloria Art Museum in Austin, Texas, and is held in various collections at The Carnegie Mellon Museum in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1990 Alfonse Pagano took up photography and co-authored a photojournalism book entitled DREADS. With an introduction from Alice Walker, the book published in 1999 by Artisan/Workman Press is in its eighth printing. A move from NYC to Newark, NJ in 2011 inadvertently led to the development of a new technique forging both disciplines of painting and photography. At the height of COVID, Alfonse and his partner Rowena bought a 40-foot trawler and are presently cruising in the tropics trying like hell to figure out how to make art on a boat.
