This is a portrait of a good friend from college, While the setting of my reference photo was the roof of a parking garage, I knew that in the final painting, it would have to be much more than asphalt. This is because concrete is boring to me, but also because Ian is a very lively person who find interesting experiences to have in seemingly mundane situations. To reflect this ability of his and add interest, I first added vibrancy, then organic shapes. By the end of it came ... pink parking lines, a madrone tree, a bird flying out of a dematerializing shirt with eyes and an off kilter green city.

Artist Statement Wyatt Pottorff strives for aesthetic beauty while capturing chaos. His works are characterized by metaphorical figures that represent intense emotions and swirling swaths of paint that signify changing perspective. Painting allows him to re-contextualize complex life moments and imbue them with a sense of gratifying simplicity. He hopes these images convey an embracement and adoration for the ever changing and disordered world that we live in. Bio Wyatt James Jackson Pottorff grew up in a small town in New Mexico. In Deming, Wyatt spent his early years doodling, painting, climbing on roofs and exploring derelict buildings and the desert with friends. His art often depicts altered worlds, animals and fierce characters. Stylistically his work is most influenced by Surrealist, Abstract Expressionist and Futurist art movements. In addition to a studio practice, Pottorff also manages a Southwestern clothing brand, Desert Funk. He is a graduate of the University of New Mexico’s studio art program, and has exhibited in several galleries including the Shockboxx Gallery in LA, Site Santa Fe in Santa Fe, NM as well as the Cameron Art Museum in Wilmington, NC. Currently he lives and works in Portland, Oregon.
