Title:Ikoko Aje (Poetry for the Goddess of Wealth) Medium :acrylic on canvas Size: 40x50 inches Year: 2023 Aje (Monday): This is the day on which money joined Orisa on earth and is known as the day of money. Yoruba people use this day to start business, and to discuss economic and financial programs. Ajé The orisha of wealth, economic enterprise, business, economic success in the Yoruba religion, believed to be a daughter of Olókun. Aje took its roots from Ile-Ife, being the traditional home of the Yoruba culture and tradition. Believed to be the custodian of economic activities, wealth and prosperity, came from the nooks and crannies of the country to celebrate the deity. Olokun is believed to be the parent of Aje, the orisha of great wealth and of the bottom of the ocean. Olokun is revered as the ruler of all bodies of water and for the authority over other water deities. If someone is working, you would say eku ise, meaning greetings for your work. The same thing too, if you see a business person or trader, for instance, you would greet, eku oro aje, meaning greetings over Aje's matter. You could also ask, se Aje wa? Meaning hope Aje is around? Oriki Aje: Praise Poetry for the Goddess of Wealth and Prosperity If one doesn’t work, one doesn’t earn money. It is said that Aje gives one the opportunity to earn money. Yorubas have a greeting for every situation. For instance, if people are just sitting down and relaxing, your greeting to them would be eku joko, meaning greetings for sitting. If someone is working, you would say eku ise, meaning greetings for your work. The same thing too, if you see a business person or trader, for instance, you would greet, eku oro aje, meaning greetings over Aje’s matter. You could also ask, se Aje wa? Meaning hope Aje is around? That’s a loose direct translation but to translate into English properly, that question is asking if there have been sales or opportunities to make money.
