About The Artwork

This painting is one in a series of Imaginary Botanical paintings that were started immediately after 9/11. It was the first series of works using automatism that allowed me to ignore the tragedy of that day. I had been working with the specimen collections at Philadelphia's Academy of Natural Sciences and was astounded by the breath of nature's variety. I realized that I could make my own type specimens and invent them on the spot. Later on in the series, I also started to use a hidden figure within the pictures as sort of a framework. This hidden image comes from my fascination with Boucher's Ms. O'Murphy from 1751. This painting was reproduced on the cover of Art Matters Magazine (2008) in an article about my work and my new position as the Executive Director for Allens Lane Art Center.

I've always had a love affair with making the hand made image. Exploring my imagination and setting up challenges through thematic works has allowed me to tap into an eternal wellspring of ideas. After my early training, I began creating series of works that allowed me to invent within a defined framework. Sometimes, these series would last years before I felt that I had exhausted them. The themes are often autobiographical and sometimes reference real-world events but the commonality is always a love affair with the basics of art: line, shape and color.
