ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I’d like to reflect on people who left too early, because of other people and not for coincidence. I would like to imagine a group of paintings under the title “In Memoriam”, in memory of… the almost fluorescent yellow makes me think, since my childhood, of news stories. There will be more faces, more martyrs, because they are not gone forever, their memory is with many of us everyday, in a personal and intimate, but also ethical way. Peppino Impastato was a journalist who was killed in 1978 at the age of 30 years old from that mafia which he was fighting in his Sicily, that mafia which was even in his family, from which he consequently separated. He collaborated with politically left hand press, he funded a radio broadcaster, “Radio Aut”, to report criminal mafia actions, in 1978 he ran for the Proletarian Democracy list in the municipal elections, until he was killed before the conclusion of the election campaign. I’ve been always fascinated by his revolutionary ideas (you needed to be brave in the 70’s as a young man fighting something that was even in the political administration). I was fascinated by his genuine smile. This is a homage to him and to all journalists like him, who died for their ideals, and still live with us, always. The painting is on a steel plate which is sustained by 4 little copper pipes containing magnets in the back. The effect is that the painting is almost suspended from the wall, and at the same time, the fact that the pipes can move on the metal surface, gives the possibility of being more precise while hanging the painting to the nails on the wall.

Sabatino Cersosimo was born in Turin in 1974. He studied advertising design and then received a Degree in Painting and Decoration at the Academy of Fine Arts of Turin in 1999. Since 2011 he lives and works in Berlin. Following a line that has its roots in a certain expressionist painting (especially the Viennese Secession) but evolves through the modern mediterranean and english realism, he uses basically two surfaces: metal and wood. Since he mainly paints with oil and oxidation on steel plates, the concepts of time, will and chance have been crucial to the development of his research. Art is historically considered eternal, but Cersosimo's paintings underscore art’s metamorphic nature. Here, we witness artwork as it is developing, shifting, and in some cases, mutating into other forms, much like the elements of nature on the planet. Cersosimo's paintings mirror constellations of humanity in tiny particles. In doing so, they feature many of the commonalities shared among human beings across culture, language, gender, and race.
