About The Artwork

Off the coast of County Sligo on the North West coast of Ireland, the island of Inishmurray looks East towards the mainland and Benbulben Mountain. The round stone walls mark an early Christian monastery which was founded in the 6th century. This island has been unpopulated since the last few families left their stone cottages in 1948. One of these people was Patrick Heraughty, of the King's family, who became a doctor and who, in 1967, delivered me into the world. The standing stone in the foreground is one of many which circle the Island. These mark the route which the monks followed around the island in prayer. I visited with friends and family in a small boat on a calm Summer day. Life must have been difficult for those who lived here over the centuries. It is now populated by hares and seals and the sound of gulls fills the air. This is painted with thin layers of acrylic glaze. It is on stretched canvas and will look best if framed and lit from above to reflect the subtle colours through the glaze.

I was born in Sligo, Ireland in 1967. I now live with my family in South Bohemia, Czech but I also return regularly to Sligo to be with my father and to enjoy the Atlantic coastline. I paint in both locations. I have worked in over 30 countries overseas mostly in challenging emergency and humanitarian environments. I have had discs removed in my neck and lower back and due to nerve issues I must now paint with my right wrist and arm in a fixed brace. But painting is my physical and mental therapy and it gives me much joy to share my art with you.
