About The Artwork

My practice is marked by a deep interest in the process-led aspects of painting and image making, focusing on layering, building up and reworking many of the pieces to the point of their completion. In this respect, I often work on a number of pieces simultaneously. This interest in the physical aspects of painting - its materiality and sensorial properties continues to fascinate me and the direction of my work is carried by its residual interest in the tradition of painting, its nuances and specificities.

Felix Carr (b.1993) is known for his fluid, large scale paintings that blend dreamlike figurative elements with gestural abstraction to explore contemporary portrayals of the body. Conflating painting and writing, the artist engages with the linear tradition of paint, while simultaneously exploring its limits and potentiality, particularly in relation to poetry and language. Addressing diverse reference points from the art-historical canon through to the popular imaginary, he seeks to create a rounded appraisal of the experiential and the sensory. The artist lives and works in London, having graduated with a First Class Honours from the Glasgow School of Art in 2016, when the artist was selected to exhibit in the Royal Scottish Academy as part of Scottish New Contemporaries. Since then, he has exhibited throughout the UK and Europe, with solo shows in London, Lille, and Düsseldorf, with works housed in international collections. He is the recipient of The Steven Campbell-Hunt medal, as well as the Stevenston Painting Prize (RSA).
