About The Artwork

My upbringing inspired me to create this piece called Iri Ji New Yam Festival Growing up i wondered the fascination with New Yam Festival and the respect accorded to this crop. At an older age, I came to understand symbolism of the part this age long tradition played in the past and why it’s still being upheld. I have chosen to depict the spectacle and the role played specifically by the men in this celebration and ushering in the season with explosion of contrasting and harmonious colours and brush strokes and textures applied in slightly impasto format style. The crop Yam is popular among the Igbo tribe of Nigeria, West Africa, in fact a man's wealth was measured with the size of his barn (where yam tubers are stored) by our ancestors This was aptly captured by Chinua Achebe, in his most revered novel, ‘Things Fall Apart’, where he described described yam as the “king of all crops”. The culture of yam cultivation and preservation is an age-long attribute of the ‘Igbos’ which has successfully travelled from the time of our ancestors down to this day. The New Yam Festival popularly known as “Iri Iji,or Iwa ji,(depending on dialect) is an annual cultural festival by es the energy, depth and activities that fills the atmosphere
