Born in Amsterdam in 1958. From a young age, he was drawn to artistic expressions. He pursued various studies and, after working on musical and conceptual projects for several years, Marten began painting. His inspiration was and remains the vast expanses and polders of northern Netherlands. His work conveys the silence one can experience when in the "middle of nowhere." When you find yourself in this "nowhere," surrounded only by the horizon, you feel connected to nature, to the place where you are. The silence then extends beyond just your ears... Marten describes his landscapes and seascapes as being determined by both minimalism and lines. In his artistic practice, Marten continuously asks himself: What is the bare minimum needed in order to recognize a place you've been to?
