ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This painting was inspired by all the friends I have who have recently had kids. They live in perpetual mess. I hope the viewer feels as if they’re maybe getting on their knees to come to eye level with our subject…or maybe it’s just because they’re tidying up…again! Painted in soft pastel colours to emphasise youth with bold greens to make the pears pop off the canvas.

I’m interested in portraits with a difference. I intentionally distort features as I draw, then when it comes to painting, I try to bring them back to reality. Sometimes I bring them too far too reality and the painting loses its interest, and sometimes I don’t manage to bring them back far enough and the painting remains too ‘cartoony’. However when a painting has the juxtaposition of both and a foot in each realm, this is when I judge if a portrait has been a success. A classically painted portrait with a twist of something else!
