ABOUT THE ARTWORK
“Jackie VHS (Gold)” is a work from September 2013. I wanted to visually explore what it would be like to jam an Andy Warhol painting through a VCR. The VCR seems like a perfectly Warholian way of copying and editing snippets of culture, and it seemed especially apt to reference this technology by using the process of silkscreen printing which is often used for copying and reproduction as well (and was Warhol’s primary way of making work). Warhol’s famous portrait of Jackie Kennedy has been altered in Photoshop using tracking lines and static as additional visual elements referencing the disconnect between the perception of a mediated persona and reality. This new composition was then silkscreened on canvas in black ink, hand painted, then silkscreened again completing the piece.
