Jacques Cousteau Painting

Since I was a boy I was inspired by Jacques Cousteau. I remember seeing the green Cousteau Society stickers on cars around Portland growing up and flipping through stacks of old National Geographics in the attic. For this image I looked at two photos of Cousteau - one showing his head in classic red cap (I learned divers used these in their bronze helmets because the air piped down blasted cold on their heads). I used another image of Cousteau in diving gear to honor his part in pioneering this underwater technology which opened up a whole new world. I tried to paint it so realistically you could almost smell his cigarette breath! I'm inspired by his service as a French Naval officer, oceanographer and steward of the world's oceans.
