The body of work represents a quest of self-discovery. It is a documentary about the relationship between Nature and humankind…an exploration of natural cycles and the many parallels between the way that Nature copes with disasters and humans deal with sickness. Nature provides us with remarkable models of ‘being‘ and during this project I have observed how trees can adapt their growth patterns; and how, when sick or injured, they can heal and grow strong again. I consider the creative process to be a healing process; a ritual of many interactions between me and nature. By listening and living close to Nature I have developed the ability to look for and recognize the interconnectedness of all things in life. I have learned to follow Nature’s example in order to free up my true nature, my true identity. Because Art-making is something that runs deep within my nature, creativity is the one constant and reliable means of transport on my journey of self-discovery. Inevitably many surprises are encountered along the way; - de-constructions, conflicts, evolution, growth, and those joyous periods of unbounded positive energy and happiness. For me, Art-making becomes a transformative process, an act of re-creation, liberation and personal growth. In the inseparable processes of living and Art-making I aim to manage my mind in a "tree way". To imagine that my thoughts flow through me just as the wind passes freely between the branches of a tree, and to encourage my mind to be strong yet flexible as the tree that stands strong just where it is and whatever the conditions.

Originally from Transylvania in Romania, Margit Hideg holds a BFA (HON) from the University of Fine Arts of Cluj-Napoca, as well as a teaching certificate. In 1989 she immigrated to Canada and soon after continued her training in graphic arts at the Centre of Creative studies of Detroit (USA). In 2001, the artist was chosen for a six-month residency at the New Media Lab of the Canadian Film Centre in Toronto. Her interactive installation ShoeVox was acclaimed by the media arts community. Margit Hideg now lives and works in Canada and Hungary . My art is an act of building and self-discovery. It has evolved from the belief that in this fragmented world, the most important thing I can do is to create my own artistic language. Regardless of what medium I choose for my expression, I am searching for a meaning that reflects our relationship with nature. In this life of illusionary realities created by mass media, we are disconnected from ourselves. Because of our lack of feeling of the interconnectedness of all things in life, we stand in danger of being isolated. With my work, I am trying to bring people back to nature. Strongly believe we need to get out the message that we have ground ourselves like trees, in order o find our sense of self, celebrate the fact that we are interconnected with all species, parts of the same web of life, and therefore also irresponsible for each other.
