A multi-media multi-layered piece on hanging canvas. Filled with textures, colors and lines inspired by nature. Different techniques/styles from my years creating all come together in this one piece. Each layer representing a different stage or style I have used in the past. When I moved back into my studio after it being repainted and cleaned, it was too pristine for my creativity. I felt lost. After much soul searching and struggle, the idea for this piece came to me. It began with the idea of creating a “path” of different styles and techniques I have explored over the past; I would incorporate maps of different places I lived while working in each style. As with all of my work, it evolved from that initial idea. It has many layers of different styles. Suggesting how we carry our past experiences with us, they are always there, some more under the surface at times and others rising to the top – or staying strongly with us. It tells a story as you travel through it, similar to a scroll, therefore I feel the best display is to have it hang in a scroll-like manner. the composition of a hanging scroll, the foreground is usually at the bottom of the scroll while the middle and far distances are at the middle and top respectively.

My current works in the "imaginary landscapes of organic memory" series, are created through a process of direct interaction with each piece as they develop. Each piece starts with a drawing which I see as the bones or structure of the piece and from there a dialogue begins. Through a combination of choices, chances and reactions, layer upon layer builds the landscape. I see the process similar to how we develop through our lives with each layer representing experiences built upon previous ones, all which shape who we become. I call upon shapes and textures which I have experienced from nature, which have become part of my soul and where I find peace and safety from the man-made conflicts of day to day living. These imagined landscapes have a surreal element which challenges the viewer yet are also filled with a comfortable familiarity which connects and welcomes.
