I found this amazing image, of a wildebeest jumping to escape attack from a predator, in a 60s book of photographs made in the Masai Mara, kenya. It feels timeless and joyous despite the animals desperation. I have had some sign writers bronze for a number of years and mixed with some PVA to make this piece of drift wood something more special. The parallels with religious icons, which use gold to donate importance and hierarchy, are obvious to me, but I never presume to imaging the viewer understands all my intentions. Using a simple palette I kept the painting loose, and used the show through of gold to add moulding. I hope it looks both primitive and new. The framing came about as I found and then sanded down an old oak frame, to find a lovely dark grain. I have subverted this with a punk fluorescent yellow which intentionally bleeds at the sides of the frame, see pics. There is no glass as I don't like the effect glass has on paintings. I hope that the dynamic of the wildebeests jump is augmented by the bright framing.
