About The Artwork

Summer in the City of Elmira in up state New York is a dramatically beautiful time of year. Not only are gardens in full bloom, but the fields and rolling hills are bursting with vibrant colored wild flowers and grasses. I am moved specifically by them because of the their wild, free and natural placing and coloring. Nature is left in God's hands and the results are always fresh, alive and untouched by man. Driving to and fro, the wildflower displays that decorate the roadsides are amazing. What most people will see as weeds become intricate compositions for me ablaze with color, movement and texture. After painting large scale fields it is as if I then pluck fresh wildflowers from the painting itself and place them in still life compositions that I create. I am looking to express the power and beauty in the simple compositions I create. That initial impact of the flower burst in a jar or vase is the shape that moves me and the colors and thick rich textures bring the whole painting to vibrant life.

Julian Raven is an inspired artist, expressing his art through impressionist, expressionist, and other styles required to capture the specific artistic objective of the subject at hand. He was born in Richmond-Upon-Thames in London, England. He was raised on the Mediterranean, in Marbella, Southern Spain. At a young age he exhibited a natural inclination towards the visual arts. Winning school art shows demonstrated his talent as a child artist. Raven studied art in Spain and in London at the Chelsea School of Art. He has used his artistic 2D and 3D skills in his custom woodworking and cabinetmaking business he had for many years. But the goal was to return to the canvas, when economically possible, which he did in the summer of 2013. This was a natural transition since his work was always his art even though for a season it was more craft like in the creation of fine furniture. Julian Raven lives secluded in the wooded hills of the Allegheny Plateau, which is in the northern part of Appalachia on 20 acres of land located in Elmira, New York. He is married and has three children. Artist. Thinking spatially, 3 dimensionally and in color comes naturally to Raven. Images rapidly fill the inner spaces in the studio in his head, that his eyes perceive in the world. Most of his work is done 'upstairs' in his inner studio. For years he has developed his skills in inner vision development and design, enabling him to create simultaneously whilst doing other things, even mundane chores. Raven's work reflects his bold, bright and passionate personality. His great liberty of spirit is reflected in his bold, pure and direct use of color. His work is vibrant, full of energy, drama and power. His paintings are alive, they pulsate with creative energy and spiritual freedom. This gifting, he has discovered, works across many realms of creative life. Artistically, it functions in different media, both two-dimensionally and three-dimensionally, whether painting, designing, cabinet making or woodworking. They all work as dramatic stages upon which Julian Raven's gifts perform. It is however, the visual arts, to which Raven's curious, divergent, creative and inquisitive mind ultimately resonates. Flux and change are natural to the artistic flow within Julian. The new and fresh artistic vision drives him onwards. Connecting with his deep inner-world and releasing the creative experiences through his art is destiny to him.
