Vienna was rebuilt by women, shifting through the rubble after the Second World War. From the midst of chaos and destruction, they were able to piece back together that which constitutes Austria. The values and talents that are deeply rooted in the history of this nation. Be that the highly advanced, prosperous middle class of Vienna in the 30’s in which women held great freedom and power. Or the empire, which would become, led by Maria Theresia, the most advanced administration of its time in Europe. Be that the first zoo ever built, located in Vienna, one of the most liveable cities in the world. Austria incorporates so much beauty, culture, and talent. These qualities influence the culture, creating unity and identity. We are part of this history today — we, as people, and the Wiener Linien that bring us together and from place to place. How precious this foundation is, put back together piece by piece by the “Trümmerfrauen” (rubble-women) after the war is further emphasized by the richness of materials worked into this piece. Gold, coloured silver and abalone shells echo the rooftop pattern of the Stephansdom, found in the heart of Vienna. A stained window, a series of still images from archival film material from the Wiener Linien, photos of women, sifting through rubble, one of the first women trolley conductors, posing proudly in her white boots all come together as a jewel from the Vienna Treasury — our lives, together amid a rich culture and valuable history. It only takes an American to remind the Austrians of what they have.
