About The Artwork

A detail of the killer seaweed that engulfs the tramp steamer Corita on its ill fated journey from from Freetown South Africa to Caracas in South America. In the film Lansen picks a piece of it up and it immediately tightly wraps itself around his hand, drawing blood. Inspired by The Lost Continent.

I had two paintings shortlisted for the Royal Academy of Arts – Summer Exhibition 2019. Machine Learning and Are we Connected? Both responding to themes of identity and environment. You can watch a video about my journey as an artist here: https://michaelfinlay.online/ I am a film industry veteran having worked for over 50 years in the British film industry as a scenic painter on productions including Raiders of the Lost Ark and Star Wars, Return of the Jedi. Each of my unique paintings is inspired by one of the many productions I have worked on during my long career. They are at times sensual, evocative, dramatic and inspired by fantasy.
