Kamehameha I was a high chief of Hawaii island, who successfully conquered all of the Hawaiian islands in 1810 (Davis 1968). This acrylic-on-canvas painting depicts Kamehameha using symbolic color and text-based abstraction. The reds and yellows reference the red and yellow feathers used in the 'Ahu 'ula feather cloaks, used to distinguish royalty. The text-based abstraction weaves an impasto rendition of Kamehama's last words into the portrait. The text reads, "E na‘i wale nō ‘oukou e nā ali‘i, i ku‘u pono a‘u i na‘i ai ‘a‘ole loa e pau" (Desha 2000). In English, it translates to, "Endless is the good I have conquered for you." This quote symbolizes his enduring gift to the Hawaiian people: the consolidation of the Kingdom of Hawaii under a single, ruling monarchy.
