A diptych showing two figures on the canvas. The top panel is a dual portrait and the bottom panel is abstract, but when shown as a diptych, it resolves the painting into a figurative piece. It is an expression of materials, using watercolor as the base upon which I do an expressive oil drawing. The painting works its way down the figure, abstracting further as it goes. The challenge was unifying all of the unique aspects of the painting, creating a really powerful piece.

Melanie lives and works in rural North Carolina, outside of Asheville. Her work looks at portraiture from different angles and uses the face as a ground for abstraction and exploration of the psyche. The bold, expressive strokes in oil underscore the delicate ephemera of the watercolor.
