About The Artwork

The painting takes its name from the seed pods of the Kurrajong tree (seen to the right of the large stone at the top.) The tree is native to Australia, but also grows here in Turkey, where I collected some fallen pods in a local botanical garden in order to paint them. Like all the works in this series, Kurrajong feature natural objects placed in an abstract design (here, a circular design). I chose things that aren't stereotypically 'pretty' for this painting, such as stones and seed pods. We don't usually give such things a second glance, but they contain their own hidden beauty - and a wealth of tiny details. I began this work by roughly sketching out stones, seed pods and so on on the canvas, changing the composition quite a lot before I was satisfied and started to paint the images in in acrylic. The work took a long time to paint but I enjoyed trying my best to replicate the various details that I could see. The work was shown at the 2023 Art Ankara International Art Fair. It is also painted on the sides of the canvas and uses artist’s quality colours. It's protected with two-coats of acrylic spray varnish and is shipped in a tube.

I am an artist and writer with paintings in private and corporate collections in Turkey, the UK, the United States, Canada and Australia. I live in Adana, Turkey. I am a member of both local and national jury-selected artists' associations and often participate in Turkish-government sponsored exhibitions in other countries. I paint in both figurative and abstract styles, but most recently my interest has been in capturing the kind of details in nature that you would usually pass by without a second glance: things like weathered rocks, broken branches and dying leaves. The idea behind this 'Vanitas' series is perhaps that the value and beauty of the ordinary things in nature lies in their impermanence. Many of my works are built up of multiple layers over a long period of time − using a variety of techniques and tools. Layers of paint are poured, glazed, scratched, and rubbed away until the desired effect is achieved. Each exhibition I take part in brings me into contact with many artists and art lovers, whose feedback and reactions to my work I find invaluable. I continue to develop new techniques and explore new approaches in order to develop my personal response to the world around me.
