ABOUT THE ARTWORK

It was April 9, 1926. Six fishermen had spent several days at sea on their usual fishing trip. Finally, with the arrival of Easter, they decided to return home. Along the way back the sky had become particularly threatening, with the arrival of the Calabrian wind which had agitated the waves, a prelude to the west wind, dangerous in these situations. A wave capsized the boat. The fishermen desperately tried to swim to shore, but their attempt was in vain. Meanwhile, one of them, not knowing how to swim, clung to the remains of the boat. It was evening when the survivor finally approached the rocks, safe. 'L'inattendu' , the unexpected is a metaphor for the ability to welcome the new, the unforeseen possibilities, the narratives and existences outside of what is already known. Just as 'unforeseen' was the outcome of a tragedy, in which the only one who survived was the one who did not know how to swim and for this reason did not challenge the storm but relied on the waves.

Born in Puglia in March 1983, Roberta Baldi has been an art lover since her early childhood. After attending the “E. Maccagnani” school of drawing and painting in Lecce, she studied psychology in Rome. In 2010 she moved to Paris, where she perfected self-taught oil painting techniques, frequenting the ateliers of local artists, and participating in exhibitions and performative events in which figurative arts were put in a dialogue with music. Initially she dedicated herself to figurative realism, searching in time for a more precise synthesis. She currently lives and works in Rome. Each one of her paintings begins with inspiration from lived experiences and events, chance encounters, and travels. Sometimes her artworks are stories, other times metaphors - to quote Umberto Eco, they are “opera aperta”, an open work.
