Stepan Myannik

About the Artist

Stepan Myannik

United Kingdom

Stepan Myannik is an international multidisciplinary artist and designer whose practice moves between painting, sculpture, installation and collectible design.

His work explores the relationship between attraction and discomfort, humour and violence, the familiar and the unsettling. Recurring images and objects are transformed through changes in context, scale and material, allowing apparently playful subjects to acquire more ambiguous meanings.

Material is central to Myannik’s practice. He is interested in the way an object’s meaning changes once the viewer understands what it is made from, and in how material, function and form can create both contrast and harmony within the same work.

Myannik is also the founder of Alien Cube, an ongoing art project conceived around the idea of placing an artwork beyond Earth, and Marmetica Design, a collectible-design practice exploring natural stone, light and the changing role of screens within contemporary interiors.

His current work includes Halo Screen where he is the founder of Marmetica Design UK based studio, a full-scale natural-stone screen that retains the proportions and architectural presence of a television while removing the moving image. The project continues his interest in material transformation: the digital screen is replaced by geology, while light becomes the only remaining “stream.”

His work has been exhibited internationally, including at CICA Museum of Contemporary Art in South Korea, and he participated in the Ria Keburia Art Residency in Georgia. His practice has been featured by international media including Der Tagesspiegel, Deutschlandfunk, Deutschlandradio Kultur and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.

Myannik’s work is characterised by close attention to material, surface and detail, while using recognisable cultural forms to question how objects acquire meaning.
