The Mona Lisa is a portrait of a young woman, set against a mountainous landscape with distant and misty horizons. She is depicted in a three-quarter view, up to her waist, including her arms and hands, looking at the viewer, which was relatively new at the time and breaks with the portraits that had been common up to that point, which cut off the bust at shoulder or chest level and are entirely in profile.
