ABOUT THE ARTWORK

As if posing for photos in a fishing contest, these anthropomorphised cat folk display their catch and their “love” of fish, but the mood is sombre, implying that these fish might be precious and few. Whilst many consider domestic and ferrel cats a plague on our native wildlife, humans are a far greater plague, adversely impacting the survival of fauna and flora globally. The sadness in this image is a reminder that our ‘love” of a particular species can, conversely, result in our eventual elimination of that species’ existence.

Claude Jones is a New Zealand-born artist, whose work explores the complex relationship between humans, animals, and the natural world. Jones’s sculptures are curious crossbreeds of animal, human and plant, evoking the fantasy realm of children’s books, but with a sombre twist. Her use of narrative, irony and symbolism, invites viewers to re-evaluate their relationship with nature, and in particular, with other animals. With an art career spanning over 15 years, Claude Jones has exhibited widely. She has been the recipient of several awards, grants and scholarships, including 10 international artist residencies. Jones’s artworks are represented in public and private collections around the world. Claude Jones is a plant-eating pacifist who passionately believes in the emancipation of all innocent beings. Her artwork reflects this philosophy.
