As the last rays of sunset disappear behind a tall stand of white pines on the western horizon, multicolours of light-rays reach out for the last time on this day, across the snowclad farm fields. The brilliance of this display on this mid-winter’s day is fleeting, and over within minutes. For this painting, snow is painted in deep blues and violets creating a quiet, solemn foreground; the setting sun is painted with brilliant yellows, pinks and reds. The cool colors of the land bring out the intensity of the warm colors applied to parts of the sky. There is no exaggeration here, this is for real what the eye beholds. I am continually drawn to such displays of rich, strong colors. The work “Sunset on the Farm”, does not provide a lot of details, but rather the focus is on the strength of the color found in the sky, and the land. Night is descending. There is much to be gained when surrounded by the silence of a wintery landscape. Feel the cold, appreciate the colors of the setting sun and the promise of another day, soon to begin.

Kaija Savinainen is a professional artist whose studio is near Canada’s capital, Ottawa. She earned her Fine Art degree from the University of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, taught by an inspiring group of professors originally from the US, and UK who built that exemplary program. There, she excelled at painting, printmaking and drawing and received several studio awards and a faculty commission. She graduated with Great Distinction and was awarded the President’s Gold Medal. Her Nordic ancestral roots have given her a strong affinity for the environment. Her paintings offer insights into nature’s vulnerability but also, it’s aesthetic beauty. As she states, “Through my art I stimulate the viewer’s sense of where we are going with what nature has bestowed upon us. Nature needs our respect, and care more than ever these days”. Savinainen belongs to The Ten Collective, a group of artists who exhibit annually to rave review in the Ottawa area and online. Her works have been purchased by several universities, and the Alberta Art Foundation, and are in private collections in USA, Canada, Japan, and Europe.
