ABOUT THE ARTWORK

"Le Rivage Tranquil" translated from French gives you "The Tranquile Shore". Often times, I see images of rivers and marshes in my work once the abstract collision of paints have dried. These "Birds's Eye View" images of coastal regions are never intended upon starting a painting, but subliminally find a way to resemble the coastal environment in which I live.

ARTIST STATEMENT _________________ When I paint, I am in relationship with canvas. This relationship reflects the human condition interacting with the environmental forces of nature. Each work is a vignette of the dance between man, woman and nature; opposing media, at first attract one another and then repel each other. Balance becomes controlled chaos, and finally gives in to an unpredictable outcome, and the relationship is restored. This bond lives in the eyes of all who view my work. BIO _________________ As a fifth generation Charleston artist, Stephen carries on the noble tradition of taking the inspiring sights and textures that surround him and creating passion-filled works of art for collectors around the world. Leaping away from his traditional training, he uses a highly nontraditional approach, combining a myriad of differing materials. Incorporating elements from the city and from the land where he lives and paints, the artist creates a truly unique avenue to delivering his visual adventure to the eager eye. Stephen wants you to touch the completed paintings, just as he did while making them, and feel the painted currents and terrains that have resulted from his process. Follow the lines of each brushstroke and each drift of paint and imagine these flowing pathways of color and light, just as the artist laid them down on each canvas. This collaboration between the artist and you, the viewer, is the very foundation of Abstract Expressionism.
