ARTIST STATEMENT

Mind ? Psyche ? Consciousness ?

Through my artwork, I depict the poles of human existence and perception, including the unconscious.

As an artist and psychologist, I express the plurality of the mind, the psyche, internal landscapes determined by harmony and dysharmony, balance and imbalance.
Inspired by that duality my work reflects in a contemporary informal art style an impulsive yet tranquil sense of being.

Born in Berlin, I've later lived and studied in Paris and Leipzig. Being inspired by my professional experience as a psychologist and ongoing training as a psychodynamic psychotherapist and art therapist, my work reflects conscious as well as unconscious paths of mind.

The values of painting led me to experimenting with various techniques and material and evolving throughout her artistic career. Dedicated to the exploration and the freedom of the abstract form, I employ bold forms of colour and process to create. My current works are all acrylics on canvas in bigger formats.

I am happy to have participated in various exhibitions (Germany, France, Italy, Greece, Portugal, Slowenia, Bulgaria), won some international prizes (e.g. European Competition) as well as had my first solo exhibition in Paris 2018.

I live in Berlin Prenzlauer Berg and on the island Usedom.

>>>>> My artworks in acrylic technique on canvas are signed, dated, carefully protected by special spray, and, thanks to their genuine wooden stretched frames, can be hung up immediately. International shipping included.

Sophie Mangelsen creates her very own and characteristically gestural abstractions, giving them her very personal touch of elegance, rhythm and finesse, all in a Berlin understatement vibe. Her informal art appeals to introspection and evokes an inner and outer dialogue with the viewer - posing questions about consciousness and unconsciousness, harmony and disharmony, balance and imbalance - to inner landscapes of the complexity of our mind. Sophie Mangelsen, from Berlin, is additionally inspired on her journey by her experience as a psychologist and therapist. She studied at the Université Paris VIII and the University of Leipzig and found her form of expression in painting already in her youth. Her paintings are shown at international exhibitions and are in private collections around the world. In 2022 she was invited as a jury member in the international competition of BALTHASART. The artist lives in Berlin Kreuzberg.
