About The Artwork
*On show in an exhibition until December 5th* This artwork is inspired by fragments of the book ‘Bezonken Rood’ by Jeroen Brouwers. The fragments that inspired the artist are about his memories of a long-lost love: Liza. “During the few seconds I stood in my garden, I thought of Liza, in her dragonfly-blue see-through clothes, years ago. […] In my imagination I saw her in the rectangular lit window above the clock shop window as if on a television screen.” (From ‘Bezonken Rood’ by Jeroen Brouwers) The artist wrote text fragments with metallic foil in bright green, gold and silver colors. The changing incidence of light during the day ensures that the texts stand out more or less. The texts are in English and in Dutch, the native language of the artist and the writer. The artwork is ready to hang.

We can experience a whole range of feelings and emotions just by looking at those signs. From an early age I have been fascinated by letters. When I look at letters, I see beautifully designed figures. What I find so fascinating is that we don’t or hardly don’t see those figures anymore, once we can read. You are immediately transported to the world behind the letters. Based on this fascination, I want to show how text and image intertwine in my head. How they enter into a symbiosis with each other. I do this by making paintings in which I interweaves image and text. I use gold leaf and silver leaf that reflect the light in a different way each time you walk by. This brings the painting to life and makes it look different every time you look at it.
