The sea no longer gives back what it once did. A Dominican child, wearing his hat and a look of quiet wonder, casts his line into the water from a paper boat. He fishes with hope, echoing a time when the ocean offered abundance. Instead, between two small fish, his hook pulls up plastic bottles — a...

Cory Richardson

Dominican Republic

I am a contemporary artist of Cocolo heritage, rooted in the Dominican Republic and shaped by the wider Caribbean experience. My work explores memory and identity through visual narratives drawn from everyday life: domestic labor, rural scenes, communal rituals, and the quiet gestures of Caribbean existence. These images are not nostalgic representations, but active memory structures—fragments of lived experience transformed into contemporary visual language. Through painting, I construct what I define as a living archive: a body of work that preserves, reactivates, and reinterprets personal and collective memory over time. Each piece belongs to a larger continuum, where repetition, variation, and material process build meaning beyond the individual artwork. My practice is grounded in physical processes and material presence. The work does not document the past—it keeps it alive, allowing memory to remain present, evolving, and shared.
