Lovers Painting

When theories, institutions, or objects move from one society to another, they need to adapt to a new environment, just as Panchali had to adapt herself when she moved from India to Australia in 1983. She carried her cultural heritage with her. As she began to further her art practice, this was informed in her work. She started observing Indian miniature colours, history, its narratives and decoration within the paintings. Panchali started her MFA in Sydney at the College of Fine Arts and started borrowing from western tradition and that to her became hybrid. She was influenced by western and Indian thinking. Panchali then started deconstructing Indian miniatures and Indian mythology. She observed the paintings closely to understand narratives, abstraction, expressive colours and gestural marks. Within her work, she renders her canvas with layers upon layers of representational and abstract gestures that encompass the varied humans and hybrid forms. These gestures create her own personal language. It is a significant expression of the hybrid culture in which she lives in.
