About The Artwork

One of a series of studies of the Inner Hebrides . This view shows the south coast of the Isle of Mull and is rendered in gouache on paper. I was particularly struck by the dramatic, ever changing skies and the icy white light of the clear and clean Atlantic seaboard. The sky is painted freely in the hope of capturing the tumbling motion of the clouds whipped along by the strong onshore winds. Whilst being largely unspoilt, the coastal environment is full of signs of human interaction and commerce. Here a waste pipe is exposed at low tide, sea weeds clinging to its surface. Basalt rock supports many types of seaweeds, some of which is harvested for culinary use.

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

My work is primarily figurative – landscapes, portraits and narrative paintings in oil, acrylic and gouache. I never tire of the challenge of rendering a subject in a ‘realistic’ manner whilst at the same time weaving in a story, mood and personality to the piece. In the more narrative compositions, I have attempted to invite the viewer to construct the ‘story’ in their own minds from the content of the picture. My portraits seek by use of pose, composition, colour and tone to give an understanding of the subject’s character beyond the physical likeness. In my landscapes I like to convey the atmosphere and mood of the environment, so the viewer ‘feels’ as much as ‘views’. I work in my garden studio in Kingston on Thames, and my work can be viewed at ricksmithart.webnode.com
