This painting is the third in a series on the subject of memory. In my view, we can be shaped, influenced, and constrained by the collection of past events stored and retrieved from that sensation / experience we call memory. When we identify so strongly with these snapshots of the past, we may become paralyzed in the present. Whenever this is the case, we stop experiencing ourselves in the here and now. The painting metaphorically illustrates a stylized thought of woman (representing all human kind) facing this dilemma: being overcome and shattered by the onslaught of a flood of memories which threaten to so dominate her she ceases to be herself as she disappears in the all consuming memories. Still, hope remains alive of retaining experience of the here and now, in the metaphorical shapes of blue triangles, dominating the right side of the painting, as primary, universal forms, always existent. For while we may disconnect from the present, the present always exists. The artwork is painted on all sides and strung with wire for hanging, so the painting is ready to hang.

My paintings are abstract, with the underlying structure of early modernism. I like the power of icons and devotional paintings, as well as the painterly approach of expressionism, whether of the American or German schools. I tend to like the approach of European art and the confidence of American painting. I make positive paintings that depict universal ideals, while striving for simplicity in form and colour; paintings that reflect a better world for all and have an element of beauty and mystery to them. I hope my paintings have an initial appeal based upon form and colour, but that the paintings then reveal something more. My influences vary and range from ancient Egyptian to post-Modern. The most inspiring painters for me are Kandinsky, Rothko, Newman, Motherwell, Miró, Hoffman, Creme, Picasso, and Chagall. “Form and meaning give me the excuse to play with colour, my great love, and in the mix, a painting comes to life that occupies a space in the pictorial world.”
