ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I have been working on this series of paintings, called the Floaters, for more than 25 years. My method involves floating ordinary objects from nature in shrine-like spaces, made visible by a strong light. As the objects hover near walls, each other, or out into Nature, questions arise as to their ongoing resistance to gravity. This in turn gives rise to a simple question: how else do we buoy up the heart? At the center of these architectural dramas, a simple framed landscape pauses in the air. Is it a view, or is it a picture of one, floating alongside the flight of its whimsical neighbors? Given the specificity of the floating objects and the space they occupy, the question of interior versus exterior inevitably comes to mind. Does the act of floating enhance or blur the distinction between indoors and out? My primary medium, acrylic, relies on glossy liquid mediums and thick gels to enhance its refractive quality. Combining a wide variety of glazes, layered textures and scrapings, I use brushes, silicon paint shapers and squeegees to assist in my long commitment to suspending disbelief. Major Tizzy in the District of Dunes was executed on stretched canvas with 1.5-inch finished sides. The piece is wired and ready to hang, with no framing required.

SHIPPING AND RETURNS
Delivery Time:

Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

I have been showing and teaching painting for more than twenty-five years around the US and Western Canada. Having lived in Boston, Pietrasanta (Italy), New York City, Juneau, Santa Fe, and now St. Petersburg, Florida, I remain fascinated by innovations in acrylic technology. My work has recently led to an enthusiastic layering of contrasting textures produced by liquid mediums, solid gels, and opaque textured pastes applied with non-traditional tools. My present series explores the stark beauty of floating natural objects that seem to hover in a compact, if exuberantly textured, space. With this group, I continue my long research into floating as a metaphor for release to the unencumbered imagination.
