Again the description for this painting suits the whole series. This nude was one of the first I painted of this series, and it actually was inspired by a man I have never seen naked. But do I need to? No, I paint him. This painting is part of a series of male nudes. I start not by the male image, but by covering the sheet with movements and signs implied in calligraphy. That is, from these painted signs I could form letters. Instead I repeat the gesture before a letter might turn up, and sometimes abandon the path of writing altogether. Then I might "scribble" with my paintbrush. Then I might leave the painting for one or several days. When I return to it, I begin looking for the male nude that lies within the signs. So sometimes the painting is started with a clear vision of what kind of male body I feel or want to know. Other times I have no idea to begin with, but, as I wrote above, I search and find for the male body. Ofcourse this sounds a bit as if it were all just happening, slightly by chance, but I actually envision something that is already there. One day maybe I'll be able to actually find such freedom as to paint something which I never intended to paint.

Susanna Cardelli is a painter, calligrapher and grafics artist, autodidact by choice. Born in Rome, baroque art runs in her veins. A good amount of talent in the arts was passed on to her by her family. During her childhood she traveled the world with her parents, thus developing an affinity to different ancient civilizations, a taste for the decorative arts of the midoriental region and also for the impetuous strokes of european expressionism. She studied communications design in Augsburg, Germany. Having worked for many years as set-designer for feature films, she currently is part-time employed at the Filmstudios in Babelsberg, and continues working as freelance calligraphist for government institutions, international companies and private clients. She has lived in Berlin with her family since 1998, working both there and abroad.
