Manic @ ArtExpo New York - April 21 -24 - 2017
This large format, mixed-media offering by Kris Gebhardt feels a bit out of sorts. The bird, the paper stencil “A” taped and glued to the bottom, the gray and wrinkled darkness of the canvas make it nearly impossible to get one’s bearings and attach a meaning to it. Perhaps that’s why it’s called “Manic.”
Reminiscent of a Russian-painted religious icon, the hero’s pale complexion and brooding eyes evoke an unfathomable sadness. Is the “A” to signify the difficulty of dealing with life as an adult? The highest high of a dollar in excess after covering expenses for the month and the lowest lows of losing a job. Or is it a covert tip-of-the-hat to Hawthorne? The titillation of a secret love set against the drama of breaking one’s vows? Shaky and unbalanced, swinging between polar opposites, this weak and jittery figure stars in another of Gebhardt’s “paintumentaries” on a scrap of material with rough edges tacked against a reclaimed box—telling a full story with just a few sketchy images.
According to Gebhardt, on the advice of another artist, he tried to create a faceless figure. The emotion and meaning conveyed through the faces in Gebhardt pieces is the essence of the entire work and it wouldn’t be a Gebhardt without one.
