Art Description

Painting: Pencil, Textile, Digital, Color on Paper, Other.

Map of Life is about my journey and memories of my own displacements and immigration; leaving Tehran and ending up in New Orleans. Each layer represents a city in which I have lived, and they fade behind newer layers and maps. The torn music sheets used in this piece serve as a metaphor for rhythm of life. The use of sewing and stitches – present in most pieces of the series – links the piece to the underlying theme of the series: clothes and homes. The transparency in Map of Life is about the relationship between older memories and newer ones, competing memories transcending time and overlapping in one’s mind.
