Art Description

Painting: Oil on Canvas.

The Davis Lisboa Mini-Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona

Davis Lisboa, “Marcel Broodthaers #9", 2017, oil on canvas, 15,7 x 15,7 x 1,57 in (40 x 40 x 3,5 cm)

What/who inspired the work?
This painting was inspired by a film still from the a experimental film by the Belgium artist Marcel Broodthaers titled “La Pluie, Projet Pour Un Texte” (The Rain, Project for a Text), 1969.

What do you hope its viewers will feel/think?
I hope that viewers know that there is a narrative in Art History that deals with "the artists who have created their own museums". This discourse is constructed through Marcel Duchamp (Boîte-en-valise, 1936-1941, assemblage, variable dimentions), Robert Filliou (Galerie légitime, ca. 1962-1963, assemblage, 4 x 26,5 x 26,5 cm) and Marcel Broodthaers (Musée d'Art Moderne, Départment des Aigles, 1968-72). To follow this line I founded The Davis Museum (www.davismuseum.com), the first and only post-museum of contemporary art created in a ballot box through Facebook in 2009. This cultural entity recognized by the Government of Catalonia (Kingdom of Spain) has several sections and one of them is "The Paintings Section From Davis Museum ". This wing is divided into portraits and still lifes. The portraits are about Marcel Duchamp, Robert Filliou and Marcel Broodthaers, while still lifes are about their artworks: Boîte-en-valise, Galerie légitime and Musée d'Art Moderne, Départment des Aigles.

Why did you choose the medium, frame, color?
I chose oil on canvas because I am interested in painting not only because of its versatility as a medium but also because of its rich historical repository of images and ideas. I only use the best materials for my paintings: linen fabrics, Blockx essence of turpentine and linseed oil and also, Old Holland oil paintings. As the Davis Museum is a cube, I chose the frame of the paintings to be square. And since the Davis Museum's brand color is blue and white, I chose to have the same color in the paintings.
